Addressing the inaugural session of the first two-day all-India coconut growers meet here, President of the All-India Kisan Sabha, Mr. C.K. Chandrappan said the demand for coconut was declining day by day due to the import policies of the Centre. Mr. Chandrappan called upon the coconut growers to be united and to fight for their survival this Sunday. He said that the Central Government must take necessary steps to protect the coconut growers, including distribution of interest-free loans and announcing minimum support price of Rs.7 per coconut. He said at the end of the two-day session, a signature campaign would be launched and a memorandum would be submitted to Prime Minister, Mr. Manmohan Singh with one million signatures of coconut growers seeking special package for them. Amalapuram MP, Mr. G.V. Harsha Kumar stressed the efforts of the A.I.K.S for bringing coconut growers from all southern States into one platform. He assured them that he would bring the problems of coconut growers to the notice of the Prime Minister and take steps to resolve them soon. General Secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham Mr. Ravuri Venkaiah unveiled the flag designed specially for coconut growers. President of the Sangham Mr. K. Ramakrishna, general secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Coconut Growers Association Mr. Vaitla Chakradhar and others were present. Project Engineer of Coconut Development Board Mr. Srikumar Poduval did not turn up for the program.
