The authorities have declared high alert in East Godavari District in view of 'Helen' cyclone to safeguard the public and property in low-lying areas. According to the India Meteorological department report, the severe cyclonic storm is likely to cause extensive damage to thatched roofs, huts and disrupt power & communication lines. The department warned that the 'Helen' cyclonic storm packed with wind speed reaching upto 120 kmph, to hit southern Andhra Pradesh coast from Friday afternoon. Based on this report, the District authorities have hoisted warning signal at the port. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. Disaster teams have been deployed in the District. Major of the educational institutions & business establishments in the District declared holidays in view of this cyclone. Heavy rains were lashing Rajahmundry and other parts of East Godavari District since Thursday morning. Tidal waves washed away a part of sea wall at Uppada, flooding beach road and is affecting the vehicular traffic.
