'Laila' Disrupts Life in District

Heavy rain and winds caused by cyclonic storm Laila disrupted normal life in East Godavari district. There was a continuous downpour in many parts and the accompanying strong winds worsened the situation. Five hundred fishermen families were evacuated to safety from Hope Island, Chodipallipeta and other villages in Thondangi mandal. Scores of fishermen families were evacuated from Kothapatnam village near Uppada due to the turbulent weather conditions existing there. Kakinada city received 11.6 cm rainfall between 6a.m and 5p.m of Wednesday. Several streets were flooded and vehicular traffic was badly affected by the rains. Officials of Revenue and other departments concerned were put on a high alert in all 13 coastal mandals.  Strong tides have been blowing the entire coast between Kakinada and U.Kotthapalli. Measures for rescue and rehabilitation of those affected by the cyclone were taken. Equipments and material like boats, power generators and earth movers were ready to meet any possibility. While people in the low lying areas of coastal areas were advised to move to safe places, officials have been ordered to take necessary precautions in all revenue divisions in view of the possibility of heavy rains that are likely to hit the coast in the next couple of days. Heavy rainfall was recorded in Rayavaram (36 mm), Mamidikuduru (32), Bikkavolu (31.8), Katrenikona (30.2), Razole (29.6), Allavaram (28.4), Kakinada Rural (25.8), Ainavilli (25.4), Anaparthi (23), Atreyapuram (22), Mummidivaram (19.8), U.Kotthapalli (18.4), Kadiyam (18), Samalkot (16.6), Peddapuram (13.4), Thondangi (13.2), Tuni (11.9), Korukonda (11.2) and Sankhavaram (10.8) in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30a.m of Wednesday.
