Kakinada, June 5th: The World Environment day was observed here on Friday. In this occasion rallies and awareness programs were conduced at various places in the region. World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The theme for WED 2009 is 'Your Planet Needs You-Unite to Combat Climate Change'.
In association with National Green Core, M.S.N Charities has organized painting competitions for the students under various categories. District educational Officer (DEO), P.R. Mallikarjuna Sastry attended as the chief guest for the program. Speaking on the occasion he called upon the students to utilize the available resources properly by avoiding the wastage. Later he distributed prizes to the winners.
An awareness program was organized at local Rajiv Gandhi Degree and PG College. Ex air force officer and best teacher award winner, Mr. P. Sheshagiri Rao attended as the chief guest for the program. Presiding over the meeting he explained the importance and uses of environment. Famous lawyer, P. Subbarao explained about the changes taking place in environment and its adverse effects on the common life.
A rally was organized by the N.S.S students of Aditya Degree College along different areas in the town. Aditya Educational Institutions secretary, Mrs. Lakshmi Rajyam waved the flag and initiated the program. The students raised slogans against the usage of plastic bags and also asked to safeguard the environment by planting tress and avoiding their destruction.
