Vizag to get international airport

Visakhapatnam, Nov 24 : The Air Travellers Association India (ATAI) president D Varada Reddy today said the airport in Visakhapatnam may be upgraded into an international airport. Talking to newspersons here he said that there were proposals to upgrade Visakhapatnem into an international airport.

Visakhapatnam was a fast growing city with an expected population of two millions and industrial investments touching Rs.1,60,000 crore in current and future Investments. The visakhapatnam airport was a major entry and exit point with nearly 5,50,000 passengers from this region traveling to destinations in US, Australia, the West Asia, South East Asia and Europe. They were currently using Chennai and Hyderabad international airports as Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam airports do not handle international flights.

Mr Reddy also said Andhra Pradesh which has a population of 8.5 crore suffers in comparison with other Southern states in terms of international connectivity. Truchirapalli, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Pune, Nagpur and Calicut, which were smaller towns compared to Visakhapatnam had international airports, he said.
