Vijayawada, June 19th: Two contract laborers who were entrusted drainage cleaning work in the city died after they entered a man hole on Friday. The victims Kanaka Rao, 40 and Appala Naidu, 30 were given the work by the VMC contractor on the Bandar road. As soon as Kanaka Rao entered the manhole he was swept away due to strong current in the drain. Later Naidu followed and met with the same fate. Both died immediately in the spot.
The fire personnel with the help of police retrieved the bodies from the drain. The contractor Suryanarayana Raju fled from the spot after the incident. A case was registered by the Machavaram police. Vijayawada Mayor, Ms. M. Ratna Bindu said that the contractor did not inform the VMC officers about the execution of the work.
