Eluru Range DIG Mahesh Bhagawat announced the launch of `Jana Maitri', the Police Department's initiative to build bridges of friendship with people, on April 6. Under this program, circle inspectors, sub – inspectors, head constables and constables would visit a few villages in their purview once in a week and hold `grama sabha' to know the people's problems including those related to law and order and get them solved with the cooperation of the other government departments. A police station would have 15 villages in its jurisdiction and each one of them would be adopted by a head constable or constable. These cops would maintain the relations with people and also pass on information about any major incident to the superior officers. Jana Maitri was obviously aimed at image building which enables the police to render better services. Addressing media persons at the district police office here on Monday along with SP Y Nagi Reddy, Mr. Bhagawat has warned people against approaching corrupt persons for passports or visas as there were several cases of cheating by such middlemen. Passports and related travel documents can be obtained through agents in Rajahmundry, Ravulapalem and Razole who are authorized by Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs. Passports or other certificates like work permits made-up by fake agents would cause serious problems, the DIG cautioned said persons possessing fake documents would be detained upon their arrival at foreign airports and they would have to struggle to prove their credentials. Unsuspecting women face the risk of landing in prostitution rackets organized by fake agents who serve as conduits for flesh trade. Cases were being booked against such fake travel agents under Immigration Act.
