Kakinada, June 1st: The number of tuberculosis (TB) cases has gone up in the district with the detection of 2,016 positive cases in the first quarter of the year 2009. For the same period in 2008, 959 cases and 999 cases in 2007 were detected in East Godavari district. The increased number of cases is attributed to higher detection of cases as people are opting for tests after symptoms like continuous cough. Poor maintenance of sanitation, congested habitations, lack of personal hygiene and lack of medical care are said to be the main reasons for spread of TB.

To keep a tap on the spread of the disease, the authorities have set up nearly 60 designated microscopic centers in several parts in the district. People showing symptoms like continuous cough for two weeks can approach these centers to undergo medical tests. If a person tests positive, then he will be provided with free medication for six months.

Awareness drives on preventive measures like maintenance of personal hygiene, maintenance of sanitation, intake of nutritious diet and undergoing of regular medical check up were taken up by the authorities to decrease the affected percentage. According to the district TB treatment officer, Mr. Y. Daneil a person affected with TB is expected to spread the infection to 10 to 15 persons in a year.
