Hyderabad, Sep 17th: The antiviral drug Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) which is widely prescribed to treat swine flu will now be available for purchase at retail outlets in the capital and elsewhere in the state from Thursday. Only drug stores that have schedule X license will be allowed to retail these drugs. Hetro Drugs, the company involved in manufacturing Oseltamivir, will start retailing the antiviral drug from its 30 outlets in twin cities and 60 outlets located else where in the state. Drug will be sold strictly on basis of a doctor’s prescription.
The schedule X of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act includes narcotic and psychotropic drugs. To be able to sell such drugs, medical stores should obtain a Schedule X license from Drug Control Administration. In charge director of DCA Kondanda Ramaiah said that they were ready to issue Schedule X license to eligible stores with in 24 hours. Not many drug retail outlets in twin cities are eager to obtain Schedule X license because of procedural delays and need for adherence to rules and regulations under Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
