Subham to screen AIDS cases

Rajahmundry, July 28th: The Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society in association with voluntary agencies has launched a drive called ‘Subham’ to screen high risk groups, including commercial sex workers and male sex workers for HIV/AIDS in East Godavari. In the district nearly 10 non government organizations are being involved in the program to identify people with high risk behavior who were infected with HIV/AIDS.

 

The program which began on July 1 is supposed to be wound up on July 31 but was extended up to August 10. As many as 4,375 persons were screened and 224 were tested positive and were being given anti-retro-viral therapy free of cost at the ART centers in Rajahmundry and Kakinada. Screening is being done at 44 voluntary counseling and testing centers in various parts of the district.

 

Health assistants at VCTC centers are also carefully counseling both HIV/AIDS positive and negative persons to lead a normal life. Additional district medical and health officer, Dr. M. Pavan Kumar said that the prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS is 1.75 percent presently. The awareness drive is helping a large number of people who have tested positive for HIV/AIDS to take treatment at the ART centers. Nearly 500 HIV/AIDS patients are taking treatment at ART centers at Rajahmundry.
