Hyderabad, Nov 12th: Health services in ten teaching hospitals across Andhra Pradesh were affected as junior doctors embarked on indefinite strike demanding hike in stipend in the wake of the recommendations of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The medicos refused to attend to outpatients and also inpatients in wards, barring emergency cases. The junior doctors, who have been staging protest demonstrations affecting health services for over one hour in the last three days, intensified their stir following failure of two rounds of talks with the State Health officials.

Inviting the striking medicos back to the negotiating table, Medical Education Minister P Sudarshan Reddy told media persons that the Government was ''sympathetic'' to their demand. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Elections were coming in the way of announcing any specific amount as hike for the junior doctors, he said. Dismissing the two rounds of talks as a mere ''eye wash'', Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors' Association Convener S Nagesh told newspersons that the Government had put into cold storage the recommendations of the Experts Committee on stipend hike.
