Hyderabad, Aug 25th: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a draft bill to amend the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act provided severe punishment to acid attackers. In the proposed bill a new section 326A will be inserted in the IPC. This allows a minimum 5 year sentence to the offender which was not there in the Act earlier. Offenders can be penalized from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakhs to bear the medical expenses of the victim.

The new section allows the trail to be conducted exclusively by a district judge. Earlier the trail was conducted by any magistrate. The proposed amendment will make it difficult for a public prosecutor to withdraw a case even if there is a compromise. At present, several cases are not being pursued as the offenders and their family members force a compromise with the victims. Several ministers supported the amendment to the IPC which will punish acid attackers severely. The bill also allows he courts to announce compensation before the judgment.
