Hyderabad, July 13th: The SSC Board will put an end to the marks system and likely to introduce grades system from this academic year 2009-10. The board will also do away with the term “fail” while awarding certificates. The officials propose to replace the term “fail” with “needs improvement” or “promotion on hold”. The move is aimed at de-stressing the students and removing stigma attached to “failure” in exams. Interestingly the orders pertaining to awarding grades were issued in 2001, but remained only on papers.

The issue once again came to force in the wake of reforms proposed by the union minister for HRD, Mr. Kapil Sibal to de-stress the students. The state government has initiated efforts to implement the grading system from the ensuing SSC public exams 2010. The officials of school education department discussed the matter with the SSC Board. Thought the Board sought time till 2011 public exams, the officials asked them to start the grading system from the ensuing exams in March 2010.

According to the officials there were two proposals for awarding grades. The first one is to award four grades A, B, C, D and the second proposal talks of awarding grades from A to F. there are also suggestions to award A+, B+, C+, D+ grades to differentiate students with better performance.
