Kakinada, Dec 6th: Soil pollution is increasing in the Godavari districts due to the excessive usage of fertilizers and pesticides by farmers. Both the East and West Godavari districts recorded the highest utilization of pesticides and fertilizers in the state. Environmental experts maintain that high utilization of pesticides can lead to soil pollution, hence suggest bio-friendly fertilizers. Agricultural officials say that farmers here mostly prefer chemicals for getting a high yield.

The department is conducting awareness camps among farmers against the use of these. According to a study, Andhra Pradesh stands in the second place in the use of fertilizers, next only to Punjab. Speaking to the media, Mr. K. Lakshmipathi Kumar, environmental engineer of the regional office of the AP Pollution Control Board here, said that biological control of pests was one of the important means for checking pest problems in almost all agro-ecological situations. Biological methods of pest control can also reduce the use of pesticides and thereby minimize soil pollution, he said.
