Kakinada, Jan 19th: The women self help group (SHG) bank linkage program has been affected this year due to default in repayments by beneficiaries in East Godavari. The bankers are reluctant to continue financing for the scheme meant for womens uplift. The program enabled the district to stand in the forefront of women empowerment through self reliance. But this year it received a setback with bankers reluctant to extend their cooperation on the same scale as earlier because of large scale defaults in repayment.

The collector, Mr. Gopala Krishna Dwivedi said on Monday that stringent measures were initiated  against some of these groups, which are either irregular or intentionally defaulted. As part of this RR Act (Revenue Recovery Act) was implemented on 35 groups to collect the dues. This was necessary to assure bankers about the revenue department's banking in the recovery of loans. He admitted that the repayment of loans which was to the tune of 98 percent a year ago slumped to 70 percent this year.
