A seminar on ‘IT in health care: New trends and technologies' was organized by Software Technology Park of India (STPI), Kakinada at Rangaraya Medical College (RMC) auditorium here on Sunday. Vice-Chancellor of JNTU Kakinada Prof.Allam Apparao while participating said India is a global resource pool of information technologists but the level of penetration of IT into the health care sector is one of the lowest. The potential for adoption of IT by the health care industry is huge, which is however not realized to a large extent. The importance of IT has gone up slowly and it was confined to play a greater role in future because of its multi–disciplinary nature. It involves experts from diverse fields he added. For instance, the Human Genome Project (HGP) which was one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs had the cooperation of computer experts as the key element. Nearly 20,000 scientists from around the world worked on the HGP for almost ten years to release a draft of the genome.
STPI- Hyderabad Director and Development Commissioner (IT & ITES) P. Venugopal said the Indian health care industry was estimated to be worth about Rs 1,00,000 Cr and to grow at the rate of 13 % for the next five years. About 5 percent of the national GDP is accounted by the health sector. Patient records, prescriptions and a whole lot of other things could be computerized for the benefit of the patients. Doctors would be able to do wonders by providing advanced tools of IT for patient care. District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) D.Vijay Kumar said he was looking forward to IT specialists to extend a helping hand in utilizing IT in primary health centers (PHC's) which supply to the rural poor. He has proposed to provide a computer and Internet connection for every PHC to be in a better position to deliver the health care services. The proposal could amend in about two months.
