Second research center for state

Visakhapatnam, July 28th: The state has become the nuclear hub of the country with the second campus of the Bhaba Atomic Research Center (BARC) coming up in the port city. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited has already decided to set up a nuclear power plant at Pulivendula in Kadapa district and Vizag also set the stage for the development of the country’s first nuclear submarine.

 

Sources said the new Barc campus would focus on energy research and strategic needs of the country in the civil and defense sectors.  Since the Trombay facility of Barc has reached this saturation point, the center has decided to set up a second campus over 3,200 acres at Achyutapuram, about 80 km from here.

 

The research reactor in the Achyutapuram unit would also be connected to the isotope processing facility to supply isotopes to local hospitals to treat cancer patients. Further the campus would also house the Homi Bhabha National Institute, a deemed university offering graduate programs in nuclear science.
