Scholarships yet to be disbursed

Kakinada, Jan 20th: In a view to encourage the students of SC, ST, BC and EBC categories the government is providing scholarships to the them. But the students are not satisfied with the results as the departments concerned failed to pay the scholarships within the stipulated period. Particularly the social welfare department in East Godavari has to pay scholarships to nearly 19,500 renewal students of inter, degree and engineering course, for this academic year. As usual it received nearly 19,500 fresh applications of which 460 are rejected after verifying.

The department deposited Rs 11.48 crore as scholarship amount to 17,500 renewal students in the banks. The banks transferred around 40 percent of the deposited amount to the students and failed to credit the balance amount. The official maintained that due to technical problems they could not transfer the rest of the amount. The collector, Mr. Gopala Krishna Dwevedi conducted a review meeting on the payment of scholarships with the heads of welfare departments and the banks. He said that the officials have to maintain transparency and also be accountable to the higher officials in implementing the respective welfare schemes.
