Hyderabad, Aug 21st: The Supreme Court on Friday gave permission to the authorities to conduct elections for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The State Election Commission will issue the election notification after Ramzan and Vinayaka Chathurthi and the polls will be held in October before Diwali. The SC lifted the stay imposed on the election by the Andhra Pradesh High Court and said that it need not be stalled for non-exclusion of creamy layer from the backward classes.

This directive was given by the SC while disposing of a special leave petition filed by the state government challenging the HC order. The judges said the GHMC polls could be conducted without depriving the right of the creamy layer within the backward classes to contest from the 50 reserved seats. However the SC granted liberty to the petitioner before the HC to challenge the candidature of creamy layer representatives.
