Hyderabad, May 14th: Negligence of doctors in treating a patient costs Rs I crore to NIMS (Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences). The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered NIMS to pay Rs 1 crore to a software engineer whom its doctors rendered incapitated nearly seventeen years ago. This is the highest fine ever levied on any medical negligence by Supreme Court in the country.
According to the sources a software engineer, Mr. Prashant Dhananya is son of retired BHEL employ, Mr. Sheshadri. Prashant was diagnosed for chest pain at NIMS in 1992. Doctor suggested for a surgery and he was operated for a tumour in his left chest by a cardiac surgeon, Dr. P.V Satyanarayana at NIMS in the same year.
At the stage of recovering from the disease he was again attacked by Mylopathy due to which he was treated as out patient for nearly 317 days at NIMS. With the negligence of doctors in treating him, Prashant became paraplegic, suffering paralysis and other serious complications.
Prashant filed case against the hospital demanding a compensation of Rs 4.60 in the year 1996. National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission awarded him Rs 15 lakh against his demand. He again filed case in Supreme Court and demanded Rs 7 crore. On Thursday the court gave judgment to pay Rs 1 crore to Prashant.
