Department of Central Town Development has decided to provide basic facilities for bicycle riders and Pedestrian's. They have decided this to control pollution as well as encouraging people to  ride cycle's and to walk. Under the NMSH (National Steady Housing) Project, this will be introduced in all the major cities with the help of funds provided by JNNURM. As a part of this, special routes will be constructed on both sides of the main roads for riding bicycles and walking. Plans are also being made to arrange markets near to colonies and arrange buses within colonies. Therefore, the Sub Committee arranged in NMSH had submitted report on this. According to Buildings Construction rules, the inner roads must be constructed in minimum 40 feet (12meters) in layouts.  Therefore, this can be implemented only for the wide roads. They are also planning to implement Cycle Sharing Scheme. As of now, this proposal has been accepted in Delhi, Pune and other 10 major cities. The following are the actions that will be taken place as part of this project:
  • Special routes with 2meters extension on both sides of the road for riding bicycle and walking
  • Planting of saplings on both sides of the road after every 12 meters, such that there are total 125 plants for every 1KM.
  • Five crossing points and signal system for every 1 KM.
  • Speed of the any vehicle must not exceed 50KMPH in main roads and not exceed 30KMPH in streets. If the road extension is below 40feet then speed must be controlled to 20KMPH only.
  • Reduce in the construction of National Highways within cities.
  • Avoiding heavy vehicles to enter the streets.
  • Create awareness in people and change their thinking that usage of bicycle is only by middle class and backward class people.
  • Arrangement of parking lots for bicycles.
