Rich tributes paid to Sir Arthur Cotton

Kakinada, May 15th: On the occasion of 206th birth anniversary, rich tributes were paid to Sir Arthur Cotton also known as father of irrigation here at local JNTU on Friday. The program was jointly organized by the Institution of Engineers (India) local center and the Retired Irrigation Engineers Association, Kakinada. In this occasion JNTU VC Prof Allam Apparao and Retired Engineers of the Irrigation Department, Prof. Rao facilitated former chief engineer of irrigation A. Rameswara Rao and others for their valuable contributions to irrigation engineering.

 

Speaking on the occasion several speakers felt that the services of Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton were not recognized properly. They also felt that the contribution of the legend to the irrigation system was not recorded properly. VC mooted the idea of taking up degree and PG courses in irrigation engineering by the university from the next academic year. He felt the need to keep him in high esteem always as his contribution to transform the drought hit coastal Andhra as a fertile ground was remarkable.

 

The Congress Schedule Castes cell state coordinator, Mr Ganta Sundara Kumar appealed the government to declare the birth day of Cotton as “Farmers day”. He added that as a token of gesture of his services, especially in the development of irrigation, the government should observe May 15 as the “Farmers Day”. He called upon the farmers unions, Rythu Karyacharana Samiti from coastal districts to work unitedly to honor the great man.
