University Grants Commission (UGC) has appointed Raghavan Committee to study the scenario of ragging in educational institutions and recommended strict action against the guilty. Advising students not to spoil their careers by committing ragging, East Godavari District Collector M. Ravi Chandra participated in the meeting here on Thursday. Mr. Ravi Chandra said that the committee recommended the suspension of students who participated in ragging, immediate cancellation of benefits like scholarship and fellowship, not allowing them for examinations, with holding their results and suspending them from hostel. The committee also recommended charging of fine up to Rs. 2.5 lakh and keeping the guilty away from educational institutions for certain period, he added. Mr. Ravi Chandra said that the UGC, in association with the BSNL set up a toll-free number 1800-180-5522 and also website is arranged www.helpline@antiragging.net for providing help to the ragging victims.
