Rajahmundry, July 22nd: The fisheries authorities are coming out with proposals for modernization of fish markets and construction of marine community halls under the Chief Ministers special package in the current fiscal in East Godavari. Modernization of fish markets at a cost of Rs 10 lakh per unit in urban centers and Rs 5 lakh in rural areas will be initiated soon.
Proposals are prepared for modernization of markets in Rajahmundry, Dowleswaram, Kadiam, Rajanagaram, Kakinada, Peddapuram, Samarlakota and in other areas. This involves provision of pucca sheds, supply of water, power and maintenance of sanitation. Community halls are also being proposed for construction in fishermen colonies at a cost of Rs 15 lakh per unit.
In Kakinada, three fish markets are proposed either for construction or for modernization and three community halls for construction. The government is also providing financial assistance at Rs 25,000 for each Matsya Mitra Group, comprising women beneficiaries to improve their fishing business. At present there are nearly 60 Matsya Mitra Groups in the district. Efforts are on to enroll more fisherwomen into MMGs.
