Rajahmundry, Aug 17th: Five Central jail prisoners who were on a hunger strike in the prison premises for the last six days gave up their stir on Monday. Eight of the demands out of the 12 made by them were accepted by the jail authorities. The prisoners have taken up a fast-unto-death from August 11 after submitting a memorandum containing 12 demands to the jail superintendent, Mr. P. Sainath Reedy. The health condition of few deteriorated by Monday. One of them, Veeresam, was shifted to the government hospital for treatment.
After many requests the jail authorities have not responded to the demands of the prisoners and they went for hunger strike from Monday. Sensing trouble, the authorities held parleys and finally accepted eight demands including keeping the Maoists and Janashakthi leaders in special cells, taking them for hearing to the court without handcuffs, provision of food as per menu and provide other amenities. The authorities agreed to review the remaining four demands after consulting senior officials. The prisoners threatened to continue the stir if jail authorities failed to accept the remaining demands within two weeks.
