Kakinada, Feb 5th: With a view to control the corrupt practices of officials or mediators in paying the wages to the beneficiaries of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and providing pensions under Social Security Pensions (SSP) schemes, the department launched a pilot project, Smart Cards, for making such payments. East Godavari was among few districts selected to implement the project in the state. The projects overall objective is to provide an operational framework for increasing the outreach of mainstream banking and financial services to the poorest of the poor by using technology based solutions.
Banks and government will work together to open accounts and issue Smart cards to the beneficiaries of these schemes, in the next stage, the banks will start delivering mainstream banking services like saving, deposits, remittances, loans etc to these accounts. However, while talking about the project's progress in East Godavari, the payments of nearly eight lakh NREGS beneficiaries and more than 10 lakh SSP beneficiaries are going to be streamlined and they would be made through Smart cards. A total of six banks including SBI and Andhra Bank are extending their services.
