Visakhapatnam, Oct 23rd: The Union Minister for State for Human Resource Development and Visakhapatnam MP D Purandhareswari asked the health officials to take serious note of the spread of the flu virus and said precautionary measures should be taken for prevention and control of the fever in the slums. The Minister was attending a review meeting with medical officers, District Administration Officers here and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Medical Officials. District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) J Sarojini said with the confirmation of two more swine flue positive deaths, toll goes up to five during the last 24 hours in the city.
Two people, including a woman, fell victims to swine flu while undergoing treatment in the District Chest and Communicable Diseases (DCCD) Hospital in the city, while a 39-year-old woman D Manga Ratnam of OLD CBI office area died and G Mosaiah (36) of Chintalapudi village of Devarapalli Mandal in the district was confirmed with H1N1 influenza and were admitted to the Government Chest hospital, late night. The first fever death was of K Jagadeeswara Rao, a manager in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. He was the first casualty to the swine flu fever since October first.
As many as 23 people have been detected with H1N1 virus since it broke out during June, the disease has claimed five persons till date and all of them died this month despite hot weather condition prevailing in the city. All the ones tested positive were from C category cases after the patient was discharged today morning. After Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam has recorded the highest number of suspected or confirmed cases of swine flu, the reason being more international passengers coming here and also because a lot of people come and leave regularly, DMHO Sarojini said. The DMHO and the Government Chest Hospital superintendent P Subba Rao said the death of the boy with symptoms of cold, cough, fever and sore throat, the spreading of the disease among the local community is causing alarm even among the medical fraternity.
