Kakinada, Dec 24th: Nursing students of the Government General Hospital, Kakinada here continued their stir for the seventh day on Friday. A total of 141 students, including 16 from the boys category participated in the protest on the hospital premises here demanding that government pay Rs 4,000, Rs 4,500, Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000 as monthly stipend for first, second, third year and interns of nursing courses respectively.

According to the president of the Students Nurse Association of the hospital, Mr. R Jeeva Kumar, government was spending crores of rupees on several welfare schemes including Rajiv Arogyasri and NREGS, but when it came to the welfare of nursing students, it was turning a blind eye and is giving a stipend of only Rs 18 perday, thus using free services during the six month internship.

Though the issue was taken to the notice of the minister concerned, there was no response, he lamented. Nearly 2,000 nursing students of nine major government general hospitals in the state were participating in the strike and they also started relay hunger strikes.
