I.Polavaram, July 6th: The minister for rural water supply, Mr. Pinepe Viswaroop announced that proposals were underway for taking up protected drinking water schemes at a cost of Rs 450 crore to overcome the potable water crisis in East Godavari. The minister stated that a special scheme at a cost of Rs 190 crore was designed in order to develop 9 major tanks and pump water from Yeleru reservoir to cater the needs of people living in upland areas. Another proposal was made to supply potable water to central delta region from Dowleswaram at a cost of Rs 250 crore.
Admitting funds crunch for taking up all the proposed works until March, 2010, the minister assured to initiate measures to execute important proposals. Maintaining that NREGS funds could be utilized for taking up rural development works, the minister said that as the scheme was having funds worth Rs 500 crore, they could take up various works like developing roads, drains and cemeteries. As there was shortage of funds for irrigation works, the minister assured to bring the issue to the notice of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, to complete the Annampalli aqueduct construction works.
