Hyderabad, July 28th: The PCI (Pharmacy Council of India) has prepared new rules known as Pharmacy Practise Regulations for pharmacists which will be implemented in the next three months. The new regulations will define the responsibilities of pharmacists and penalties to be imposed for any violation of the law. According to the PCI president Prof B. Suresh, stringent action will be taken on pharmacists if medicines are issued to the patients without prescription. He lamented the fact that states have not appointed inspectors as required under the law.

Mr. Suresh explained that Drugs are controlled by two laws, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the Pharmacy Act. It is the duty of the drug inspector to regulate the sale of drugs. As per section 42 of the Pharmacy Act, a pharmacy inspector has to be appointed by each state council. Most of the states are neglecting over the issue saying that there will be a conflict of interest between the drug inspector and the pharmacy inspector.

The Pharmacy Council of India is also going to introduce a compulsory bridge course for diploma holders in the coming three months. Meanwhile the All India Drug Control Officers Confederation (AIDCOC) has started a pilot awareness campaign in AP with pamphlets, banners and displays etc elaborating the evils of self medication, adverse drug reactions, consumer rights and responsibilities of pharmacists etc.
