New railway line likely in 2010

Kakinada, Dec 9th: The Kakinada Sea Port Limited (KSPL) is erecting a new railway line on the port premises to ease and increase freightage of cargo that is handled at the deep water port. Preliminary works have already started and the new line will be operational from the middle of 2010. The KSPL is strong on liquid and bulk cargo, and is confident pf attracting bulk imports and exports in the near future.

KSPL chief executive officer, Mr. Y.S Prasad said that on an average 20,000 tonne of cargo were being transported daily in railway rakes. Hence the KSPL was ready to spend huge amounts on improving railway connectivity. He said that the role of railways was undoubtedly the heart of the port. Phosphoric acid, ammonia, naphtha, high-speed diesel and edible oils are among the liquid cargo being handled. Bulk cargo includes coal, bentonite, feldspar and iron ore. The port also exports cement to neighbouring countries. For all these incoming and outgoing activities of cargo at the port, railway is vital.
