Hyderabad, Aug 17th: With the increase in the number of positive cases of swine flu in the city, the state government on Monday set up eight new test collection centers. However doubts are being raised about the safety measures being observed at the centers. These centers just have the basic safety measures such as use of masks and gloves by those handling throat swab samples and the suspected patients. These centers include Gandhi Hospital, Osmania Hospital, government area hospitals and the Railway Hospital.
As per World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, a center handling HINI viral culture should be preferably of biosafety level 3 or atleast biosafety level 2 plus. All these centers are expected to send samples to Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM), where they are examined for the presence of HINI virus. The IPM director, Dr. Sucharita Murthy said all centers were active and they have been taking all precautions. Around 1,253 persons were screened at the eight centers on the city on Monday.
