New cabinet minister’s takes oath

New Delhi, May 28th: The second round of induction of prime minister, Manmohan Singh’s council of ministers began here on Thursday at Rastrapathi Bhavan after hectic consultations with the congress chief, Mrs Sonia Gandhi. Nearly 59 ministers were inducted into the cabinet on the day. On May 23, PM had allocated portfolios to six ministers. The swearing in ceremony started at 11.30 am with President Pratiba Patel giving the oath of offence at Ashoka Hall in the presidential palace.

 

Mr. Kapil Sibal, Ms Ambika Soni, Mr. Kamal Nath and Ms Ananda Sharma merged as major gainers with Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh allocating to them the key ministries of HRD, Information and broadcasting, road transport and highways, commerce and industry. Mr. Murali Deora, Mr. Sushilkumar Shinde, Mr. S. Jaipal Reddy, Mr. Vayalar Ravi and Mr. Praful Patel retained the ministries they held in the earlier government.

 

With this expansion, the total council of ministers will go up to 79, leaving just two ministerial berths for any political exigency on a future date. The total includes 33 cabinet ministers, 7 ministers of state with independent charge and 38 ministers of state. The state ministers who found berth in the new cabinet are Jaipal Reddy, Jairam Ramesh, D. Purandeswari, Panabaka Lakshmi, A. Sai Pratap and M.M Pallam Raju. The first session of the newly constituted Lok Sabha is expected to begin from June 2, and is likely to continue till June 10.
