Model colleges in 11 districts

Hyderabad, Sep 21st: The centre will set up model colleges in 11 educationally backward districts in the state which have low enrollment ratio. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) will be signed between the state and the centre for this. According to the MOU, an amount of Rs 8 crore will be spent on each college, of which the state government will bear Rs 5.33 crore and the balance amount will be released by the centre. In order to remove disparities in higher education the centre had identified 373 districts in the country as educationally backward.

All of them have an enrolment ration lower than the national average of 11.4 per cent and the centre has announced one degree college for each of these districts. Of these 11 are in the state including East Godavari, West Godavari, Medak, Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Adilabad, Khammam, Kadapa, Kurnool, Srikakulam and Mahabubnagar.. The centre has also decided to provide financial support to set up more colleges in tribal and backward districts. Chairman of APSCHE, Mr. K.C Reddy said that the plan is to increase enrolment of students in higher education from 10 percent in 2007 to 15 percent in 2012.
