Kakinada, June 22nd: For the cultivation of commercial crops, micro irrigation was given top priority in East Godavari. A program under AP Micro Irrigation Project (APMIP) will be taken up over 3,000 hectares at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore in the year 2009-10. Under this program, drip irrigation or sprinkler irrigation mode will be fixed to the selected beneficiary land for better crop yield. This will enable farmers for effective utilization of water resources by minimizing wastage.
The APMIP has raised subsidiary to farmers from 70 percent to 90 percent on the cost of installation of equipment for cultivation. The SC, ST farmers will be provided with 100 percent subsidiary. The East Godavari APMIP project director, Mr. D. Manohar Rao said that the program will be taken up in all 58 mandals in the district. He also said that more than 300 applications were received from the farmers in regard to the same. Previously the program was confined to upland areas, and now it is being extended to delta areas.
