New Delhi, July 12th: The metro bridge under construction collapsed in Jamrudpur of southeast Delhi early Sunday morning. Six persons including five laborers and site engineer were killed and more than 15 other laborers injured in the incident. Owning “moral responsibility” for the incident, the DMRC chief, Mr. E. Sreedharan submitted his resignation to the Delhi Chief Minister, Ms Shila Dikshit, who rejected resignation.
The tragedy occurred nearly eight months after a similar incident on Vikas Marg in East Delhi which claimed two lives. A probe has been ordered by the DMRC and Delhi government. The Center too, is likely to initiate an inquiry. Talking to a news channel from Hyderabad, the Union urban development minister, Mr. S. Jaipal Reddy described Mr. Sreedharan as architect of the DMRC.
The Delhi government announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of those who died and Rs 2 lakh for each injured person. Mr. Seedharan flew back from Bengaluru to New Delhi on Saturday morning and rushed to site. He later announced his resignation. He said that a four member committee has been constituted to probe the incident and further action would be taken.
