Kakinada, August 3rd: A proposal initiated by the government for the merger of Panchayats into nearby municipal corporations and municipal bodies did not receive the expected response. Representatives of these bodies not only responded negatively, but resolutions were also passed opposing the move by the government. The move to form municipal Panchayats by amalgamating villages into nearby major Panchayats also received a negative response from the respective village bodies.

With local body elections round the corner, the issue of proposed merger gains both political and administrative significance. It is learnt that the government has proposed merger for the overall development of rural areas with assured funds from the central government. Under this program, development of amenities like roads, housing, drainage system and allied activity is expected to meet the changing needs of people. Under this program several villages around municipal areas were proposed for merger.
