Hyderabad, June 1st: Meira may become first women Loksabha speaker. The stage is set for the unanimous election of Ms. Meira Kumar as the speaker of the 15th Loksabha. She will be the first Dalit women to occupy this high constitutional office in the country’s parliamentary history. Ms. Kumar is the daughter of former deputy prime minister Jagjivan Ram.

 

While Ms Kumar is the candidate of the Congress and its allies in the UPA, the main opposition party BJP has announced that it will support her. Sources indicate that the other parties like Left, Samajwadi Party, BSP, RJD, Telugu Desam which has Dalit woman speaker in the state, Ms Pratibha Bharati and the BJD and ALADMK would do so as well.

 

Ms Kumar’s nomination papers will be filed on Tuesday. The congress president and UPA chairperson, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi is expected to propose Ms. Kumar’s name in the nomination paper. If election for the post is required, it will be held on Wednesday. Asked about the post of deputy speaker, the opposition party leader, Mr. L.K Advani said that the BJP parliamentary board would take a decision on Tuesday. The names of Mr. Karia Mundra, Mr. Sripad Naik and Mr. Ramesh are doing rounds for the post.
