Rajahmundry, May 22nd: In attempt to ensure supply of clean and safe drinking water, Rural Water Supply (RWS) authorities are collecting water samples in villages and sending them for analysis to find out whether they are fit for human consumption in East Godavari district. Based on the tests, they will advice the gram panchayats to take necessary action to make the water portable by treating it. So far, no negative reports have been received. There is higher salinity in groundwater in about 59 habitations locations along the coastline in Amalapuram division.
The problem of salinity has increased because of agriculturists and aquaculturists digging borewells. RWS authorities are empowered to make alternate arrangements to ensure supply of drinking water to avoid shortage, especially during summer and local bodies are also empowered to avail funds from the XII Finance Commission for the purpose. RWS authorities are also supplying drinking water through tankers to Thoorangi and Gorripudi villages. The rural water supply superintendent engineer, Mr. R.M.R. Dayal, said, as the canals are going to open for water flow from June 1 after closure for about a month, there will not be any problem for availability of water.
