Hyderabad, May 18th: Aiming to raise global awareness about Hepatitis b and Hepatitis c and to encourage prevention, diagnosis and treatment, world health organization has observed May 19 as world hepatitis day. Shockingly 1 in every 12 people world wide is living with either chronic Hepatitis b or Hepatitis c. With this the WHO has chosen the theme “Am I Number 12?” on this occasion.
Chief gastroenterologist, Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Dr. D Nageswara Reddy said that the awareness level of Hepatitis among the Indian population is low even though the disease was more prevalent than HIV and Cancer. He said that Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by several types of Hepatitis virus. It damages the liver leading to cancer or even to death.
Among the six different strains of the Hepatitis virus including Hepatitis A, B and C, B and C are most dangerous. This is the second most important cancer causing next to tobacco. Doctors say that the best way to wipe of the disease is to avoid activities like body tattooing, body piercing with unsterilised equipment. HBV vaccination is also an effective way to prevent both HBV and HCC.
