Major fire engulfs HC

Hyderabad, Aug 31st: A major fire engulfed the Andhra Pradesh High Court building early today, gutting a number of Judges' Chambers and the Library. The fire was detected around 0536hrs on the second floor of the Old High Court Building, also housing the Bar Council Office and the Library on the ground floor. The fire soon spread to the adjoining new High Court building through the bridge-way, setting afire a number of Judges' Chambers and even the Court Halls.

Thirteen fire engines were fighting the raging fire, even as the huge smoke billowed from the building, giving an eerie background to the ancient building. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was one of the first to visit the site and directed for coordination in consultation with the Chief Justice of the High Court. State Law Minister M Venkataramana told media at the site that the Court Hall four and six were completely gutted along with a number of Chambers of Junior Judges and their conference halls.
