Colombo, May 18th: LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran was shot dead by Sri Lankan Special Forces on Monday. Prabhakaran was shot dead as he tried to breakout from the army encirclement. According to a military spokesman, Prabhakaran and his top aides were driving in an armed plated van accompanied by a group of rebels in a bus approaching the Special Forces. Exchange of fire took palace for two hours and finally the forces fired a rocket at the van bringing an end to the battle.
Army sources said that Prabhakaran body was pulled from the van and identified. The dead bodies of his son Charles Anthony and three other top leaders, Pottu Amman, Soosai and Nadesan were also found in the van. Celebrations broke out here as news spread of the death of Prabhakaran. Tamil Nadu went on alert following the news. According to the director general of police, Mr. K.P Jain the police forces were kept ready as there are chances of pro-LTTE group attack on them on hearing the news.
