Lorries strike: Effect on daily consumer goods

Kakinada, Jan 5th: The first day of the strike organized by lorry union was turned to be success in the district. With the national wide call given by the Lorry Owners Association union pertaining to few demands, nearly 25 thousand lorries took off the road. There was a huge effect on all the imports and exports in the district. If the situation continues for few more days, the rates of vegetables and other daily consumer goods was expected to raise.  

     The strike has also shown impact on the supply of fuels. No stock boards were being displayed in many of the petrol bunks. This situation was raising tense among the consumers of both East and West Godavari districts. The consumers of the domestic gas were also worried that they will not get the refills even after several days with the on going strike.

     Several trucks remained off the road from the early hours of Monday with the call given by the Lorry Owners Association raising demands. Few of the demands made by the association include the slashing of diesel rate by 10Rs, reducing the national permit fees to Rs1, 500 from the present 5,000Rs and exemption from payment of service tax and professional tax etc.


    
State joint secretary of Lorry Owners Association Mr. Ch Ammireddy said that they were organizing the strike to bring pressure on the government to accept their demands. He also said that they were not intended to cause trouble to the citizens but only to pressurize the government.
