Hyderabad, June 12th: According to the medical and health officer (DMHO), Dr. Ch. Jayakumari, there was a huge shortage of blood in the blood banks due to lack of donars. Mrs Kumari said that even if the stock is available, as many as 39 out of 66 blood banks in the city have not renewed their licence to operate. In addition to this the rising number of accidents has also led to a spurt in demand. The demand of blood has also resulted in an increase of unlicensed blood banks in the state.
The World Health Organization has confirmed that 90 per cent of the eligible candidates do not donate blood. A single sachet of blood ranges from Rs 900 to Rs 1,200 depending on the blood components involved and the scarcity of the blood group. The poor often find it difficult to get the blood in times of need. Only rich people are able to afford the cost. Usage of blood from unlicensed blood banks may cause widespread contamination of blood which can lead to HIV, Hepatitis B and other dreaded diseases.
