KMC to get power from waste

Nearly eight lakh residents of kakinada city will shortly be free from mosquitoes as the Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC) is going to take steps for handing over the city’s garbage to a private firm for generating power. Kakinada, the headquarters of East Godavari District, was recently upgraded into a Corporation along with Rajahmundry. Though the city’s official population is around 4.5 lakh, sources say that around 8 lakh people live in the city which has 50 wards.
    Due to the heavy population and industries, the KMC receives around 2.5 tonnes of garbage per day. At present, the officials send some garbage to the dumping yard located on at the outskirts of the city. The rest of the garbage remains scattered on the city roads sources added. The KMC 16th ward corporator, Mr.Ch. Venkata Satya Prasad, said that the KMC’s initiative was welcome as residents of the city would be free from dust and garbage. Besides controlling mosquitoes and other insects, the KMC would get power on subsidy from the plant due to the project, he opined.
