Hyderabad, June 19th: The delay of monsoon this year has hit Kharif sowing operations across the state. The state got only 16 mm rainfall between June 1 and 10 as against the normal of 25 mm for the same period. This is a deficit of 36 percent. Because of isolated rain only 2.4 lakh hectares was sowed which is only three percent of the total crop area of 79.07 lakh hectares.
During the same period in the last Kharif season, 3.33 lakh hectares had been covered. Cultivation of paddy, bajra, maize, ragi, groundnut, sesamum, castor, sunflower, cotton, mesta, chillies and onion are being taken up in various districts by farmers. Agriculture officials, who are monitoring falling water levels in reservoirs, say that the situation is under control and they would wait for a fortnight before deciding on a contingency plan.
