The JNTU-Kakinada, which was established in August 2008, is seeking the State government's financial support for developing its infrastructure facilities needed to grow into one of the best institutions of technological education in the country. Formed out of JNTU-Hyderabad along with JNTU-Anantapur, JNTU-K has jurisdiction over eight coastal districts which includes Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts. The university has 237 colleges affiliated to it and the requirement of infrastructure is huge. JNTU-Anantapur has a centralized digital library, an engineering office and bank and post office buildings and teaching & non– teaching staff quarters but not in JNTU-K. Moreover, the JNTU College of Engineering, Kakinada, which was presented university status had a long history and has an excellent track record. In this way, it is older than the JNTU-Anantapur.
JNTU-K has estimated that it requires Rs.10 Cr each for university administrative block and a digital library, Rs.9 Cr for diamond jubilee complex, Rs.5 Cr each for examinations and valuation center and a convention center, Rs.4 Cr each for directors' and principal's quarters and teaching and non-teaching staff quarters and Rs.5 Cr each for restructuring and upgrading of electrical distribution system and roads development. The university has prepared a road map for creation of other infrastructure in addition to the above facilities at a grand total cost of Rs. 73.35 Cr. The need for funds has been accentuated by the fact that 37 new courses were introduced by the Kakinada and Vizianagaram campuses whereas in JNTU-Hyderabad and Anantapur, the number stood at eight and six respectively.
The JNTU-K is now offering courses like nuclear energy engineering, spatial information technology, pharmaceutical sciences, M. Tech in advanced manufacturing systems, business management, sports medicine and mechatronics.
