Issuing identity cards to 70,000 fisher flock

 Kakinada, Dec 17th: In addition to the registration of boats, the government is taking steps to issue identity cards to the fisher flock. The authorities are in hurry to issue the cards on or before 31st of December. In addition to this the fishermen are also being supplied with distress alert transmitters (DATs).

     The government has taken this decision to increase the security in the Kakinada port after the Mumbai terror attacks. The security has been raised to Stage II in the port. In addition to this, joint vigil was taken up along with the stakeholders including state police, marine police, customs and coast guard.

    DATs were also being issued to the fishermen along with the identity cards. These DATs will be directly connected to the satellite. Incase of emergencies like fire, boat sinking and other needs fishermen can press the button and will be connected to the coast guard at Chennai. They will inform the same for rescue operations.

   The fishermen were asked to inform the authorities over the movement of suspected vessels in the sea. Deputy Director of fisheries Mr V.V.S.P.R.V Prasad said that the DAT instruments which cost Rs10, 000 were distributed to 15 boats on a pilot basis. He said that the supply will be increased in future.
