Hyderabad, June 14th: Students who secured highest marks in the SSC examinations found their names missing in the merit list of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) selections sent by the District Educational Officers (DEOs). The irregularities came into light when the parents of the affected students lodged complaints with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGKUT) which runs the three IIITs at Idupulapaya, Nuzividu and Basar.

Parents alleged that officials have joined hands with the management of private schools and are denying seats to the deserving students. They say that while 80 per cent of the seats are reserved for rural students studying in government schools, the list sent by DEOs included several students from private schools in urban areas. They further allege that malpractices by DEOs, deputy DEOs and MEOs in preparing the list have become a curse to the students.

Officials are receiving several complaints from Krishna, Nellore, Karimnagar, Visakhapatnam, Khammam and Nizamabad Districts. A private English medium school in Ramavarappadu near Vijayawada was classified as a rural school and allotted a seat in the IIIT. A Government school in same location has been states as urban and denied seats. Same is the situation with another school at Sattupalli in Khammam district.

Prof K.C Reddy, Incharge vice chancellor of RGUKT asked the students not to worry about the irregularities as they will verify each and every student before allotting seats. Mr. D Manikya Vara Prasad, minister for secondary education warned to take severe action on DEOs if any irregularities were found in allocating seats. An enquiry in this issue has been ordered, he said.
