Kakinada, July 27th: The state human rights commission directed the East Godavari District administration to conduct fresh inquiries over dredging activity in the vicinity of Hope Island offshore of Kakinada port. According to sources, the Commission gave this directive, following the petition filed by Sri Bhairava Swamy Marine Fisheries Cooperative Society of Hope Island over the damage to the livelihood of 200 fisher folk families in the island.

The KSPL, during the earlier probe by the district administration, maintained that dredging was done to maintain the navigation channel to both the Kakinada deep water port and the Kakinada anchorage port. It also stated that the dredging operations were being conducted since 1992 and was not a new development after the deep water port came into the fold of the KSPL in the late nineties. The Kakinada RDO and sub-divisional magistrate, Mr. G.C Kishore Kumar is entrusted with the inquiry.
